TREATS FAQ

What’s in the treats? 🧐
Our treats are single ingredient – just 100% pure, USDA, human-grade meat. That’s it. Freeze-dried in small batches and hand-cut at a boutique facility in Lompoc, California.

It’s equally important to mention what’s not in the bag: no additives, no preservatives, no grain, no fillers, no artificial BS, and no mysteries. Because you shouldn’t have to play detective when it comes to knowing what’s in your dog’s food.

How does freeze-drying work? 🥶
Freeze-drying uses low temperatures to remove water content from food, through a naturally-occurring process called sublimation.

That’s a fancy way of saying the ice particles transition directly to water vapor without becoming liquid first – kind of like a frost-covered meadow at sunrise on a cold morning. And all that water vapor is removed in a freeze drier under a vacuum.

This process allows us to preserve the taste and original nutrients of the meat, making it shelf-stable without the need for preservatives or chemicals. Pretty cool, right? The Incas first pioneered freeze dried food way back around the year 1200, and NASA perfected it for use in space exploration. Your dog probably won’t appreciate the nearly 1000 years of scientific advances packed into every bite, but they will think it tastes pretty great.

Are they freeze-dried raw? 🥩
Yes, the treats are freeze-dried raw to preserve the nutritional integrity of the fresh ingredients, and leave them in their natural state. We don’t use heat-based dehydration, which can result in a higher loss of nutrients.

How long are the treats shelf-stable?
The treats are certified shelf stable for at least one year. But given how good your dog is at begging, good luck getting them to last that long.

DOG JUSTICE FAQ

What’s with the name “Nose of Justice”?
We’re led by a corgi on a mission to sniff out corruption in the pet food industry and bring dogs the treats they deserve. He’s on an epic quest to right the wrongs of the dog world, big and small – starting with what’s in his food.

Tell me more about dog justice?
We’re in business to do right by dogs. Because dogs have done right by humans for the past 20,000 years. We do that with a two-pronged approach: 1. Making the treats we’d want if we were dogs and 2. A never-ending quest for dog justice.

Treat sales support our ongoing advocacy efforts for greater transparency in pet food, to ending the dog meat trade and kill shelters, to less-serious-but-still-important dog issues like walks that get cut short, making dogs wear silly costumes, and ignoring dogs on date nights. You can see a list of Churro’s bones to pick here, and even submit your own idea for a dog injustice we should tackle here.

Why is it a big deal to have undisclosed ingredients in dog treats and dog food?
Studies suggest more than half of dog foods and treats may contain ingredients that aren’t listed on the label. Beyond being just plain gross, unlabeled ingredients can pose serious health issues for dogs with allergies, because pet parents have no way of avoiding them if the label is not accurate.

It’s also dishonest, not legal, and points to a lack of care in the manufacturing process for dogs. And after everything dogs have done for us, they deserve better.

Why should I trust you, when so many dog food brands contain undisclosed ingredients?
You probably shouldn’t blindly trust any company – or nonprofit or government entity for that matter.

We encourage you to sniff around, check out our sources and come to your own conclusions.

As far as practicing what we preach, here are a few things we’ve done so far, though our creative dog advocacy efforts are ongoing:

  • Sent man meat to the FDA to protest unexpected meat in dog food
  • DNA-tested big dog food treats and found evidence of mislabeling
  • Had our own treats DNA tested in an independent lab
  • Published a guide on how to test your own food and treats
  • Wrote an open letter calling for greater transparency, regulation, and enforcement across the entire industry.

We’re actively seeking partnerships with likeminded people and organizations and are always down for a collaboration that does right by dogs - if that’s you, please get in touch here.
